First day of winter was last week and, it’s not just cooler temperatures that make their way into our homes. Pests, too, are seeking shelter, posing potential health and property risks. The National Pest Management Association (NPMA) reports that rodents invade an estimated 21 million U.S. homes every winter. Mice and rats are the most common culprits, capable of spreading diseases such as Salmonella and Hantavirus. Beyond health concerns, they can also cause significant structural damage by gnawing on wood, drywall, and electrical wiring, increasing the risk of fires.

But rodents aren’t the only pests to watch out for. Cockroaches, ants, and spiders also seek refuge indoors during colder months. Cockroaches contaminate food and can trigger asthma attacks in children, while ants spread bacteria and infiltrate pantries. Though often harmless, spiders may bite when disturbed, potentially leading to severe reactions in some individuals.
